Foods to Avoid and Enjoy When You Have Dental Braces
Are you getting braces soon in order to help realign your teeth and get a better smile? Perhaps you had them added recently. In either scenario, if you’ve never worn them before, it can be tough making the adjustment. After all, you’ve spent the vast majority of your life using your mouth in a very specific way and now you have to change all that. For many people, one of the most difficult transitions is knowing what foods to avoid and which ones to enjoy. Learning this through trial and error is never a good idea.

Foods to Avoid
While it may be tough to deal with, you have to avoid certain foods when you have braces. Eating these foods will cause a number of problems. Mainly, though, they’ll make it harder to clean your braces and your teeth. Neither is a good thing nor they could actually lead to you needing your braces on for even longer.
Sticky foods are definitely no longer your friend (they never were, really, when you consider what they can do to your teeth). This includes obvious foods like gummies, licorice and toffee, but it also means gum and even bagels. If you need help getting the food from your teeth, keep them out of your diet for now.
On the other side of the spectrum are crunchy or hard foods. Once again, candies make up a big part of this category like the kind you suck on, mints, foods that are chilled until they’re hard, chips, nuts and popcorn. Again, most of these foods weren’t good for you to begin with, so you’re not missing much.
Lastly, foods that take a lot of biting to finish off can be difficult to deal with. Corn on the cob is a great example. So are apples and carrots
Don’t worry. Though this list probably seems extensive, it still leaves you with plenty of options to choose from.
Foods You Can Enjoy
As promised, here are some foods you can definitely enjoy without worrying about what they’ll do to your teeth. Furthermore, you’ll notice that not all of these are extremely healthy, meaning you can still enjoy a little guilty pleasure here and there.
Most dairy foods are going to be just fine and the calcium is always a good idea for your teeth. Cream cheese, yogurt and treats like pudding and milk shakes are fine.
Soft breads are ok too, meaning you can have tortillas and many forms of the traditional store bought versions. However, you can also have muffins and even indulge in pancakes.
Soft grains aren’t a bad choice for many meals. Pasta and soft rice are the cornerstones of many recipes, yet won’t cause you any serious problems.
You can have any kind of soft meat too like chicken, deli meat and beef. Don’t forget about seafood either. Tuna and salmon are regular staples in many people’s diets and this doesn’t have to change.
A lot of vegetables are just fine, but it’s a good idea to cook them first until they’re soft. There’s no issue with prepare or soft fruits either. This means applesauce, bananas and juice squeezed from fruits can stay on the menu.
Like we said, there are plenty of junk food and snack options still available to you. Try softer cakes, Jelly and ice cream (so long as it doesn’t have nuts or hard chocolate in it) whenever you feel a sugar craving coming on.
While changing up your diet to accommodate your braces will certainly be a big change, that doesn’t mean it needs to be an overly difficult one. The above list of foods should help you make this adjustment while still staying full and healthy.
